Need: Improvements to 3 existing duplex living cottages

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

Background: When we completed our 3 cottages (6 apartments) in 2018 we did what we could within funds available. Several items need to be improved and you can help. The concrete porches need to be resurfaced with a more durable terrazzo. The attics need to be spayed for bats. Lighting arrestor systems need to be installed on all roofs and 2 filing cabinets are needed for personal data on our 70 or so children. Pantry cabinets are needed in the kitchens. We desire to make critical improvements to our worn-out plumbing fixtures and run a water line from our new water well to improve water pressure to the cottages.

Cost:

 - Pantries for 6 apartments - $3,900

 - Shelving - $2,100

 - Installing Terrazzo wear surface over chipping concrete floors - $20,000

 - Plumbing repairs in 6 apartments - $7,440

 - Adding doors where needed, in 6 apartments - $1,500

 - Bat spraying every 3 months - $1,600.

 - Lightning arrester system - $3,000 (gov. requirement)

 - Filing cabinets (2) - $500

Benefits:

  1. Fully operational plumbing fixtures.

  2. Improved functionality of our homes with storage

  3. Removing bats improves health of our children and leaders.

  4. Lightning systems improve safety

Budget: $40,040

New Duplex Children’s Cottages (Cottage 4 & 5)
IMG_0468.jpg

Amended Feb 2023: Cottage 4 is 50% funded. Current need 2 complete Cottages.

Purpose: To provide additional capacity for rescued children, reducing over capacity issues and increasing security of our children.

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

Background:

  1. Our existing cottages (#1, #2 & #3) each have 2 apartments. Each apartment was designed for 8 children and 1 auntie (house mother) per government criteria. Currently we have 64 children in 3 cottages, instead of the 48 as designed.  We have an emergency need for at least 1 new cottage (2 apartments) to relieve our immediate overcrowding. But our overall need is to construct a total of 3 cottages (2 for the boys and 1 for the girls), ages 3-16.

  2. The Sonrise Baby Home has at least 10 children that have reached an age where they need to move up to our home but we have no space.

  3. We need a total of 3 homes for the girls and 3 homes for the boys separated by a fence to improve security and privacy for the children.

The ministry serves to promote the Good News of Christ in their area of influence through education, farming, school, outreach and discipleship.

Construction of each cottage can be completed in about 6 months with all funds available.

Benefits:

  1. Eliminate overcrowding

  2. Segregates boys and girls, improving security and privacy

  3. We will be able to welcome the new children from the Baby Home and our villages

  4. Baby Home can take in additional babies

  5. Achieve compliance with government requirements

Budget: $200,000 x 2 = $400,000
