Sam was born 26th February 2013.

We were contacted by a nurse from the Jinja AIDS Support Organization (TASO) about a little boy named Sam. His mother, suffering from advanced AIDS and tuberculosis for the second time, is gravely ill and unable to care for her four children. With no support from extended family and nothing to eat, the older siblings scavenge daily just to survive.

TASO feared Sam might contract TB, so Sonrise stepped in. Though we had little, the money meant for his transport was given to the starving family instead. When Sam arrived, he was severely malnourished and suffering from painful jigger infections in his feet, which our loving aunties quickly treated.

While it broke our hearts to separate them, it was necessary to protect Sam and give his mother a chance to recover. Her words still echo: “Now I can die in peace knowing my baby is safe.” - She has since passed.

Sam is now thriving at the Children’s Home. He’s full of energy and loves wrestling with his friends, playing in the mud, and doing anything that keeps him outdoors. But beneath all that rough-and-tumble fun, he has a soft spot for the kitchen—especially when it comes to cooking chapatis for his home. It’s one of his favorite ways to show love and care to those around him.
